ABOUT THE PROJECT

The current world seems to be trapped between secularization and identitarian closure, implying a global crisis that is widespread and multidimensional in nature. The dominant dogma of the culture of peace in its different forms, founded on non-violence, tolerance, and solidarity, seems to be weakened at every turn by fractures where beliefs and allegiances play a major role. In that context, knowing how to examine the state of religious and cultural coexistence within a society would make for a better understanding of its mechanisms, and facilitate diagnosing its potential failures.

In light of the above, Adyan is taking a role in the ‘World Barometer of Cultural and Religious Pluralism’ – a research project implemented by Observatoire Pharos – in partnership with the CéSor – EHESS in France, LMI-MACOTER (IRD) in Mali, and Université Saint-Esprit de Kaslik in Lebanon, between March 2021 – February 2024, to measure the intensity of identity tensions within a society, and its ability to absorb shocks between different sets of values to preserve the common good. This indicator is used to identify threats to peace and prevent conflicts.

OBJECTIVES

The World Barometer’s purpose is to help to bring peace to societies and foster a better understanding of the phenomena of identarian tensions.

More specifically, it has three sub-objectives:

Grading: each country is assigned a grade as a sign of everyone’s trust in it: the country’s society itself, international organizations, donors, political partners, etc.

Informing: meant as it is to be disseminated as widely as possible, the Barometer report intends to provide contextualized keys to comprehension of the situation in a country.

Accompanying change: encouraging awareness in states and helping to improve the efficiency of political decisions seeking pluralism while favoring appropriation of the indicator and its results by the assessed country.
