ABOUT THE PROJECT

NSCCE is a Public Policy Reform for National Education for Citizenship and Coexistence in Lebanon, implemented by  Adyan Foundation in partnership with the Ministry of Education and Higher Education (MEHE) and the Center for Education, Research, and Documentation (CERD), with the support of the UK government.

The project operates with three tracks:

Objectives:
NSCCE aims to strengthen the role of national education in building civil peace and social cohesion.

Expected Outcomes:

  • Reference document (National Charter) presenting the conceptual and practical framework on education for citizenship and coexistence adopted by public and private educational institutions.
  • New curricula, textbooks, and pedagogical activities on active and inclusive citizenship to cultural and religious diversity are progressively introduced in schools (Philosophy and civilizations, Civic education and Community service).
  • Teachers are trained on the new concept of education for Citizenship and co-existence and Evaluation capacities and policies are fostered on the national level.

Calendar:

  • January – September 2012: National consultation and field studies about Living-together in its relation to citizenship and religious diversity.
  • April – September 2012: Evaluation of the current textbooks.
  • October 2012 – March 2013: National Charter on Education for Living-together development and endorsement.
  • April 2013 – March 2015: Auxiliary curriculum and Pilot textbook development.
  • January 2014 – December 2015: Building synergy between NSCCE and Adyan’s work on religious education for citizenship.
  • April 2014 – September 2015: TOT development and implementation.
  • September 2015: introduction of the Training on inclusive citizenship to cultural and religious diversity to the official Teachers’ Training Program.
  • October 2014 – September 2015: development of the Philosophy and Civilizations curriculum and textbooks (grade 11), and their introduction in schools as a pilot phase.
  • September 2015 – March 2016: development of the Philosophy and Civilizations curriculum and textbooks (grade 12).
  • June 2015 – March 2016: Development and endorsement of the Curriculum of Civic education (all grades).
  • June 2015 – March 2016: Development of pedagogical guidelines and activities for Active citizenship education.
  • September 2015 – March 2016: Development of an evaluation system and its related structure.

Results:

  • National Charter for Education for Living-together in the framework of inclusive citizenship to religious diversity endorsed and signed (March 15, 2013).
  • An auxiliary curriculum on Education for Living-together in the framework of inclusive citizenship to religious diversity was published with a ministerial decree on April 14, 2014.
  • TOT developed and implemented (starting from March 2015).
  • Alwan program adapted to the Community service plan and developed as a Non-formal pilot education program for Education for Living together in the framework of active and inclusive citizenship.
  • Philosophy and Civilizations curriculum and Pilot book (Grade 11H) developed.
  • International conference studying the developed concepts and expertise through the project and their relevance for the Arab countries (April 2015).
