Conference Objectives

Adyan Foundation has been working for the past years on the integration of education on religious pluralism, citizenship and coexistence in Lebanese schools, culminating with the 3 year “National Strategy for Citizenship and Coexistence Education” in partnership with the Ministry of Education and Higher Education (MEHE) and the Centre for Educational Research and Development (CERD) and with the support of the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office. This program, predicated on a vision of citizenship inclusive of cultural and religious diversity, and going beyond tolerance or assimilation, has managed to change the curriculum in Lebanon and include in the national program the principles and values of intercultural citizenship.

Based on this successful experience, and in view of the importance of education on citizenship and diversity as a tool for living together in today’s plural societies, Adyan foundation is organizing this conference with the aim of:

  • Examining the different conceptual and practical approaches in Education on Peace and intercultural Citizenship and refining the reflection on the subject in relation to the Arab context
  • Sharing best practices from Western and Arab contexts on education on citizenship and diversity
  • Presenting Intercultural Citizenship Education as a De-radicalization and Extremism Prevention tool
